MS School Theatre Arts

(Ms. Leadbetter)

At Surabaya Intercultural School, we continue to teach our students via the online platform. Despite the challenges that arise with this style of teaching, the Grade 6 Theatre Arts group have embraced the subject enthusiastically and have been positively learning about the subject of Drama. The group began their studies with an Introduction to Drama unit and learned some basic conventions and components of the subject; inclusive of Character Hot Seat and some of the Elements of Drama, such as Role, Relationship, Time and Place. During the unit, students created interesting and imaginative role play plans, based on the studied elements of theatre; they exhibited much creativity and imaginative thought in the process.

The exploration of stagecraft skills in performance has been a major focus in the unit. In scripted work, students identified important ways to become another character on the stage, which was then put into practice through class activities and discussion. This enabled students to prepare for their Character Interview assessment. Students worked on the creation of their own famous characters in a fictional television program for a recorded interview.

Students were given the task of writing their scripted interview; thus learning about the correct layout of this style of writing. This was followed by the video recording of the interview with a member of their family stepping in as the host of the show. The creation of a character and the expression of emotion was explored throughout the process. The Grade 6 students rose to this challenge and demonstrated impressive characters in the assessment.

The class has now begun the second unit, which is focused on the art of storytelling. It has been great working with the newest members of the Secondary School in Theatre Arts this year.

Mr. Jing Li and Ms. Zhou Ju

Time flies! The first online quarter has come to an end, and we have already started the second quarter. During this online learning time, teaching and learning have moved from the classroom to the computer screen, and what used to be done mostly with paper and pen is now more often done with computers. As a result, our high school students practice their Chinese language skills in different ways.

Typing of Chinese characters is used to improve literacy and spelling. A lot of homework that used to be done with a pen is now done with a computer keyboard. This is a completely different experience, which not only improves the efficiency of online learning but also conforms to the development of modern science and technology. Of course, this does not mean that the writing of Chinese characters is no longer necessary; students still have some writing exercises for Chinese characters.

Oral expression and text reading improves students’ oral organization and speaking ability. The reading of the text and the oral expression of the assignments not only enhances the students’ sense of the Chinese language but also trains their oral organizing ability. The best way to practice language expression is to use the newly aquired Chinese vocabulary in the thinking process.

Although there are many differences between traditional Chinese teaching and learning and online learning, students still experience the fun of learning and achieve the goal of language attainment.
