MS Science (Mr. Duopah)

Grade 6 Earth Science

Whether we have been teaching science for one year or twenty years, this academic year has been the most complex school year of our careers. We are faced with challenges in terms of teaching methods, health concerns, and enormous planning decisions.  However, despite these challenges, the 6th graders began this semester with the introduction to the Earth.

They studied the Earth system, Earth’s interior, convection and the mantle, as well as features of topography and landforms. The learning has involved several interactive slide activities where students collaborated and shared ideas in breakout rooms during Zoom meetings and Google meets. Now students are taking their prior knowledge of the Earth and are studying minerals and rocks.

Grade 7 Life Science

Synchronous and asynchronous distance learning strategies have provided high-quality science lessons for Grade 7 students. Students started the academic year with an introduction to Cells. They studied what cells are, the cell theory, how the microscopes work (virtual lab), how parts of a cell work, and how cells work together in an organism.

In addition, students have had the opportunity to also study biotic and abiotic parts of a habitat, the levels of organization within an ecosystem, the factors that limit population growth, symbiosis, and ecological succession. The learning has involved several interactive slide activities where students collaborated in breakout rooms sessions during  Zoom meetings. Students are now taking their prior knowledge of ecological succession and are studying the flow of energy in ecosystems.

8th Grade Physical Science

Do you know the difference between physical and chemical processes? Eighth grade does! They can represent chemical changes in reactions, balance those reactions, and explain what all of those complicated chemistry symbols and graphs are. Students have been learning about the different types of chemical reactions and, with the absence of in-person labs, we have been watching videos to see the difference.

Students also performed their own experiments at home to observe the effects of heat and agitation on increasing the speed of reactions. This is called chemical kinetics. Students are finishing their unit on chemical reactions – next up we have acids and bases, solutions and solubility. There will be more opportunities for at-home labs in Chapter 6. They are almost ready for 10th grade chemistry!

SS PE (Pak Purno and Pak Parno)

HS PE Class is still learning online. While it is not easy do PE and Swimming virtually, we know our students can do it! Please ensure your videos come in each week for your PE and Swimming marks. Online learning has not reduced the enthusiasm of our students. They are showing sincere efforts to improve the quality of their skills. We hope the pandemic ends soon and we can return to our spectacular SIS gym, pool and field. In the meantime, health is our main priority. Continuing to participate in PE and Swimming activities will not only result in good marks, it will increase your health and immunity!
