High School Math

Geometry

Students have just finished Unit 3: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines and Unit 4: Congruent Triangles. In Unit 3, The students have re-learned classifying angle pairs formed by three intersecting lines, studied angle pairs formed by a line that intersects two parallel lines and used angle relationships to prove lines parallel. They also investigated slopes of lines and studied the relationships between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. In Unit 4, students have classified triangles, found measures of angles of triangles, identified congruent figures and prove triangles congruent. They have also used theorems about isosceles and equilateral triangles and performed congruent transformations.

Algebra 2

Students in Algebra 2 have just had a recap of Quadratic Functions and Factoring which is an integral part of Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus.  They are now strengthening their skills with Polynomials and Polynomial Functions.  Students are not only required to recognize and work with these functions by hand, but they are encouraged to check their work using the TI-84 Graphing Calculator.

Pre-Calculus

Earlier this year, students in Pre-Calculus have learned how to analyze graphs of functions and their inverses.  Currently they are working with Polynomial and Rational Functions.  This involves functions of higher degrees and learning how to solve using synthetic division.

Business Mathematics

The class continues to learn about mathematics in the real world. Students have been studying about Savings and Checking Accounts Interests and Investments. Recently, the class has invited guest speakers from Bank Mandiri and Bank Mega Syariah to know about the products they offer in each bank. Students have learned that Bank Mandiri offers conventional banking and follows set rules and regulations by the government and Bank Indonesia while Bank Mega Syariah offers Islamic shariah-based services. Currently, the Business Math students have just finished their topic on  Cash Purchases whereby they used all product information, not just the selling price or unit price, to make good buying decisions.

AP Calculus

AP Calculus (AB/BC) is intended for students who have a thorough knowledge of college preparatory mathematics – including algebra, geometry, functions, and trigonometry.  Concepts in the course are analyzed and discussed using a combination of algebraic, graphic, numeric, and verbal methods. Topics that will be covered in the course include limits and continuity, differential calculus and applications of derivatives, integral calculus and applications of integration.

This year, class is off to a good start. All students are willing and ready to face the challenges of a rigorous course. It has been a challenging first quarter. We have covered the concept of Limits and are now  working on the unit on Derivatives. They are currently exploring and learning the concepts of differentiation of different functions and its applications.

Middle School Art

The SIS Fine Arts Department would like to warmly welcome Ibu Dewi to the Art classroom. It is wonderful to have such a talented Art teacher here to inspire our artistic students.

GRADE 7

In the Grade 7 Art class, the students have been very positive in their approach to the subject. The group learnt about Perspective and worked on developing this in different ways. One approach was to use color value to express the atmospheric perspectives. Another process was to use a straight edge to make 1 point, 2 points and 3 points perspectives via bird eye and worm eye view. The class enthusiastically worked on their art project, which was to paint a city scape, using the art technique of worm eye view. The completed art work was very impressive and showed a strong understanding of the taught curriculum.

Students have also been learning about ‘Impressionism’, which has enabled them to study an important area of Art History. The class has been gaining knowledge of some great artists and the numerous characteristics of their paintings. Students will be able to apply these art techniques to their own artistic creations later in the unit.

GRADE 8

The Grade 8 group have been working successfully during their art classes this term. Since the beginning of this school year, the students have been working on many unique art experiences. One of which, included collage making; which was a piece of art, using mixed media, and centered round the student’s culture and identity. The final products proved to be very creative and imaginative pieces of art.

Another area of study in the art classroom has been on the famous artist, Georgia O’ Keeffe in the unit based on Color and Line. Learning about the history of art is important, in order to allow students to recognize various art forms and artists. Students explored the painting style of Georgia O’Keeffe. Her unique characteristic of color and line are identifiable on her paintings of huge flowers. Students have been working on the creation of a painted flower in this style with the media of water color. The Grade 8 class have been working hard on this project.
