Measuring Language Proficiency
During the next few months, the English Language Learner (ELL) department will measure the English language proficiency of students in Grades 1-12. The information that is gathered can help determine if the student needs specific scaffolds and strategies as well as ELL services.
The type of measurement that is given to the ELL students is called WIDA MODEL. This specific test will assesses students’ English language proficiency in five different areas: Social and Instructional, and the language of English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The students will be assessed in the four language domains of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking to demonstrate their proficiency and mastery of the English Language.
Reports will be sent home to inform parents of progress along with a letter that either explains the scores or informs them that their child has exited the program. Teachers will also have access to progress and scores as this information can inform them during their instructional planning.
As previously stated, the assessment is to measure a student’s progress and inform SIS teachers when they plan their lessons. This assessment is NOT used as a grade. This assessment is not one that a student can study for. This assessment is not something that should stress a parent or a child. It is for the teacher and staff to be better informed about how to provide your lovely child with the best support possible.
