Elementary Principal

As the school year draws to a close, I would just like to take this opportunity to thank each of your for your support of our Early Childhood and Elementary School program. These last few months have been especially challenging as teachers, students, and parents alike all try to navigate the challenges of online learning. Yet, in spite of the challenges, true to form, our Elementary community has rallied together and we have made it through, stronger together.

Although the summer months ahead might not be what any of us expected, it is my sincere hope that it will be a time for families to relax and recharge. I look forward to welcoming you back to a new school year on August 4, 2020.

Secondary Principal

Dear Students, Parents, Teachers and SIS Community Members, It is with mixed emotions I write my final Latest News article as the Secondary Principal of Surabaya Intercultural School. For the past two years, I have had the pleasure of leading the Secondary School. Looking back, I recall fondly the positive changes we have made together. As I pondered what message to leave you with and what would be most valuable for me to share, I realized it’s the wisdom we have learned through this worldwide pandemic.

Tomorrow is something that should not be taken for granted. We have a wonderful opportunity to shape the world and our communities. Our young, intelligent SIS students will have a marvellous part to play in how the future will unfold for our generation and theirs. Education shapes potential. I firmly believe education is the great equalizer in life. It will shape your views, perspective and your impact on others. Our communities are dealing with many unknowns right now, but the best thing to hold onto is each other and our ability to make a positive impact and have hope for the future.

I have watched with admiration our students engage in academic and co-curricular pursuits of all kinds. They are talented, special, kind and have good hearts. All these qualities will help them go very far in life. As the world grapples with constant change, set the bar higher for yourselves.

Hold yourselves to the highest standards and give the very best you can each and every day of your lives. Make not only your families and teachers proud, make yourselves proud. Engage in struggle, give yourselves opportunities to learn resilience through overcoming challenges and obstacles. Things that take some time to come to you will be worth the wait, and will make you a stronger, more resilient person in the future. This will give you confidence to handle the roadblocks of life and view all life experiences as opportunities to better yourself.

I want to thank you all for your support and belief in me these past two years. I will miss the memories I made with you during my time here and the opportunity to work with such special young men and women. I am very proud of our students and know they will be in capable hands next year with the transition to my successor, the new Secondary Principal, Mrs. Wendy Woodhurst.

I would like to thank the teachers, staff, administration and Board for their dedication and tireless work for SIS and its great families. It has been my privilege to be the leader of such a vibrant, hard-working community. I wish you and your families all the best for the future!

My Very Best Regards,

Sonia Chowdhury
