Week Without Walls Service Project Preparation

Our secondary classes are preparing for their annual Week Without Walls.  An important part of this learning experience is service.  Please read on to see how you can support our eighth grade class as they prepare for their service project in Sulawesi.

Dear SIS Community Members,

During the Week Without Walls trip in May, the eighth grade class will be travelling to Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Centre in Sulawesi for one week. Because the center is a nonprofit organization, it depends on donations to care for the animals. The eighth grade class is planning to bring supplies that they need with them in May, but we need your help to get some of these supplies.

Tasikoki is a wildlife rescue center that saves animals from illegal trading, smuggling or animal products. It is located in Sulawesi, which is close to the Philippines, the place that was exploited as a merger point for illegal animal shipments. They save rare or endangered animals like orangutans, hornbills, lorises and lots more. Their goal is to decrease and to end the trade of protected wildlife in North Sulawesi.

Tasikoki mainly relies on donations.  So to help them, it would be great help if you would donate some items. We, the grade 8 class, will take them along with us on our trip to the rescue center. The staff would surely be delighted if you help.

Here are some of the needed items that Tasikoki has asked for:

  • Birdseed
  • Nuts e.g., cashews, almonds, peanuts, etc. (should be unsalted and with nothing added)
  • Raisins and sultanas
  • Pure honey (nothing added)
  • Sunflower seeds (shelled and unshelled)
  • Dried beans
  • Oats (with nothing added and palm oil free)
  • Peanut butter (nothing added and palm oil free)
  • Kitchen aprons
  • Good quality gardening gloves
  • Office supplies (Pencils, pens, erasers, etc..)
  • Flashlights/Hand torches
  • Bandages
  • Insect repellent
  • Antiseptic gel/hand sanitizer

All supplies collected will be used to help the staff and volunteers at Tasikoki to help support the animals in need.

If you would be so kind as to donate these items, please drop them off in the various drop boxes that the eighth grade will place throughout the school. We will be collecting items up until May 4th.

Sincerely,

The Eighth Grade Advisory Team
